I DVR'ed this, watched when it was done and pointedly avoided social media so I could watch without any distractions or outside influence. Given the different levels of biopics over the years (big budget vs. small budget, theaters vs. tv movies), I think I can safely put this on the lower level with movies such as The Toni Braxton story, Aaliyah: More than a Woman (or whatever it was titled) and a few others...and that's not a good thing, really.
You're right...this should've been stretched out over at least 2 nights and included the entire family (I mean didn't they have an older sister? Why is Chico solely being used for purpose of the drug bust later in the story? Why didn't we address EVERYONE'S drug use since we're going to include a scant few other family members? I can go on, homie...) It's pretty unfortunate that I feel like we, as the audience, got more from the 2 Unsung specials (and, for me, an old Vibe magazine article from years ago that did a story on the family) than we did this movie using Bobby as the main link between the two....and I still feel like I don't have a good idea of who the man was! They didn't even touch on his sexuality AT ALL like they did in Switch's Unsung episode.
All in all I was a bit disappointed just how it came together. Shoot...maybe BET should've handled this one.
...and as usual, you and I see eye-to-eye on this failed attempt at story telling. His family members looked more like insignificant extras than contributors to their collective success. Both groups carved a significant mark in the R&B scene and this movie left the casual viewer clueless and feeling empty. Epic failure.
Thank you again, as always, for the comments and the love!
I haven't seen it because I was turned off by the bad wigs in the trailers and adverts preparing us for the movie. NO BUENO! I mean, COME ON, this is SWITCH!! BOBBY DEBARGE!! One of the SANGINEST men of our generation!! That falsetto was PERFECT!! His memory, and Switch's memory deserved SO MUCH BETTER!!
It was hard for me to summon the strength to watch it after those trailers. But like a car accident, I couldn't help but stop and stare. In retrospect, perhaps I should have driven by, FAST. Thank you, sir/ma'am. Appreciate your feedback!
