Losing In Sports: It Ain't Worth Killing Yourself Over

It's been 3 days since the sports world watched in disbelief as the Chicago Bears lost the Wild Card playoff game to the Philadelphia Eagles on a missed (now revealed to have been "blocked") final field goal attempt. As a life-long Bears fan, for me, everything dropped:  I dropped to the floor, my jaw dropped, my heart dropped, my food dropped and our surprising Superbowl run dropped into history. All of that hard work, the fun in celebrating after each game, the shutting up of the naysayers that thought we wouldn't even have a winning season.  The Chicago Bears surprised the entire NFL community by not only having a winning season, but winning their division with a 12-4 record.  This resulted in their first time entering the playoffs since 2010. If you've been watching any sports news channel this year, at some point you will have seen the Bears celebrating in their locker room after a win.  No big deal, everyone does that.   But this wasn't just any c...

Africa: MORE Than Just Hollywood's "Black Panther" (Pt. 1 of 2)

On February 16, 2018 Marvel Comics and MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) fans, especially those of African (and African American) origin experienced the historic release of "Black Panther" .  For the first time, a Marvel Cinematic release was located in, featured and revolved around people of color. Set in the fictional country of Wakanda , it is the story of heir apparent T'Challa, who becomes king (after his father, King T'Chaka is assassinated at a conference on German soil in "Captain America: Civil War"), of a technologically advanced, uncolonized and otherwise hidden country in Africa.   King T'Challa, also serving as superhero and warrior "Black Panther", soon finds his new appointment threatened by the presence of an otherwise unknown and revenge-seeking Erik Killmonger, son of King T'Chaka's late brother who betrayed the kingdom years prior. Boasting a stellar and talented all-star cast in Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan,...

Kenny's Kmart Konfrontation

This would normally fall within my soon-to-come "Walmart Tales" series, but since it happened in a Kmart (good luck finding one anywhere anymore) this will be my first and last "Kmart Tale". It's been 4 or 5 years since it happened, but they keep bringing it up at parties and a few times on FB.  Why should YOU all miss out on the fun? [Warning, the following program may contain offensive language.  Expletives have been edited, as young viewers may be negatively influenced.  Hey, this is still a family channel.] Ok, so I was on my way to the checkout with about 10 items in my cart.  I noticed a cashier opening a new register so I made my way towards her aisle.  She turned her light on and smiled as I approached.  Just as I made my turn, a young lady ducked at an angle and wedged herself in-between my cart and the endcap, bumping me aside as she threw her items on the counter. Now I'm not one to judge people by their appearance (well, that's not ...

...annnnnd now, "A Message From Us Grown Folk!": Sagging Pants

If you follow me on Facebook, you may remember the "Message From Us Grown Folk" series.  People love sharing these thoughts with their children, who seem to have this undying sense of entitlement. No reason I can't bring them to my blog page, eh? That being said...                     ...heeeeeeeeere we GO! Originally posted on Facebook - June 2, 2012 Yung'uns, I know I've talked about this before, but it begs repeating... Sagging pants are not cool, not stylish, not "swag" and don't look good at all.  They never DID!  It's "played out", "out of style", or whatever you want to call it. In fact, it's ignorant as HELL. It's unprofessional in the workplace and your boss is a fool if he/she lets you do it. This stupid trend somehow became popular with Jodeci, in the 90s, right around the time REAL music died. (Yeah, I said it.) If you dig deeper, it began in prisons. Do you REALLY want to kno...

Davis Family Adventures: I Got'cho Back!

I had a phone conversation with my older sister (by two academic years) Denise last month.     We were discussing a recent death in the family and she was offering comfort because she knew how close I was to our recently departed cousin. Towards the end of the conversation, I told her how much I loved and valued her.  She was always there, since the beginning, giving me comfort and support during the toughest of times.     I thanked her for always being my guide, my protector, my teacher and my first beloved friend. That’s when she dropped the bomb on me. “Kenny”, she replied, “You’re too funny.   You’ve always been MY protector.   I’ve always felt completely safe and at peace when you were with me.” Wait.   WHAT??? ME? The pain-in-the-*ss little brother that my father forced to tag along with my sister when she went out? How was/is this possible? We talked for a little bit longer and she completely blew my mind with her wor...

Crazy Confessions: 25 Things You Never Knew About Me

Despite what people have witnessed or heard over the years and all of my online antics (and police records), they still have no clue who I really am and what I'm capable of.  So here are 25 little known or unbelievable facts that you won't soon forget, once you read them.  Rated PG13 I've never been fishing. Been promised on many occasions over the years. But something ALWAYS came up. I've played almost every wind instrument there is at some point, since elementary school: All brasswinds except trombone. All woodwinds except oboe and bassoon. Even the slide flute, kazoo (if you count that) recorder and diatonic & chromatic harmonicas. I once ate 10 McDonald's cheeseburgers straight for $50. They didn't stay down long though. I have an incredible fear of heights. I grew up wanting to be a stuntman. Of course, #4 cancelled THAT out. I was paddled (disciplined) at least once, EVERY year from kindergarten through senior year of high school. I have only ...

"Oops! My Bad!" (Yeah, right.)

I'm sitting in the waiting area of the BMV (what happened to "DMV"?), waiting for my number to be called when this guy jumps up, loses his footing and stumbles sideways towards me.  He puts his arm out and ends up stiff-arming (love that NFL term) me in the shoulder.  He didn't hurt me, but Lord knows that could have been avoided.  He smirks back in my direction as he continues on his way, but not before uttering, "My bad, playah". My BAD? What the hell was THAT?  Before I tell you how I feel about that phrase, let me preface it with something that I learned back in my college days... One Sunday morning, halfway through service, the pastor talked briefly about the difference between Worldly and Godly sorrow.  I will paraphrase: Worldly Sorrow is simply the acknowledgement that you've done something wrong.  Oftentimes, after you've been caught and/or called out on it. Godly Sorrow is when you experience genuine remorse for something yo...
